When you spend that much time, money and effort trying to obtain a game, you will probably over-praise it just to justify your purchase. Most of the people who call it "the best RPG of all time" are people like you who had to shell out hundreds of dollars to play the game. It was great, but the praise it gets across the Internet is really exaggerated. If you are a collector it is probably worth owning because there are only like 20,000 American copies of the game, but otherwise I just can't recommend spending that much money on the game. Unless you are very rich or are absolutely dying to experience the game, which it doesn't seem like you are considering you are asking what is so great about the game, I honestly can't recommend the game. The combat system was really unique and I found it to be a lot of fun. I remember the story being great, though. The story was interesting, but it also got a lot of flack (at least in Japan) for ripping off the story of the Ghibli animation feature: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It probably won't last you more than 20 hours and if you are a veteran RPG player you can finish it in under 15. One of the most amazing thing about the game was it's cinematic combat and awesome graphics. It was an amazing game at the time, but I highly doubt it will stand the test of time.
